Two visualisation techniques have gained great momentum in education in the past few years: Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). VR and AR are potentially very useful when teaching about a scientific topic that is difficult to experience due to being abstract or invisible, or when class size, non-availability of equipment or space is a limitation for conducting laboratory experiments.
We have conducted a co-creation and multidisciplinary project between students and staff in two University departments, for the design and prototyping of VR and AR simulations, to be used in the delivery of a module in Materials Science. This talk will address two aspects of the project: (1) how teaching of materials science can benefit from VR and AR- based virtual laboratories; and (2) the staff-student partnership approach adopted for the co-creation of the VR and AR learning resources.
Bios – Dr. Marie-Luce Bourguet is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London, in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. She leads the 4-year multimedia pathway of the Queen Mary and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunication transnational joint programmes. She has research interests in the use of digital technology, data visualisation, virtual and augmented reality, computer vision, machine learning and social robots in education. She is a member of the RAISE (Researching, Advancing & Inspiring Student Engagement) network and an active reviewer for the Student Engagement in Higher Education Journal. She is an HEA Senior Fellow and an expert reviewer for the European Commission.
Dr Maria Romero-González is a Senior Lecturer in Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London, in the School of Engineering and Material Science. She is the Director of Learning Development at the joint programme of Queen Mary Engineering School and the Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, China. Her main research areas in Educational development are increasing digital skills in the classroom, feedback and curriculum design.
